Winter Hosting: Best Gazebo Side Panels for Wind & Rain

Whilst many shy away from outdoor events in the winter months, the right gazebo side panels allow you to make more of your space, while keeping guests warm and dry. This guide covers materials, fire-retardant options, must-have accessories, and a practical weather & safety checklist.

Quick Picks:

• See our Made-to-Measure Gazebo Side Panels
• Browse Turn Button Fasteners for securing
• Need visibility? Add a Gazebo Side Window Panel

Why add sides in winter?

  • Block wind & drizzle: Enclose one to three sides to create a comfortable microclimate.
  • Guide foot traffic: Use a door or zip panel to control entry/exit.
  • Improve warmth: Sides reduce wind chill and help heaters work efficiently.

Material Guide (Wind, Rain, and Comfort)

  • Clear PVC “view” panels – great wind/rain block while keeping sightlines to the fireworks. Explore Clear PVC Fabric.
  • PVC coated polyester – robust, waterproof, and easy-clean. See PVC Coated Fabric.
  • Mesh sections – add breathability and reduce gust build-up; look at Mesh Fabrics.
  • Canvas look – warmer aesthetic for community stalls; browse Acrylic Canvas Fabric.

Tip: Mixed panels (solid + clear window) give shelter without losing visibility. For a one-panel upgrade, try the Gazebo Side Window Panel.

Fire-Retardant (FR) Options for Peace of Mind

If you’re near open flames, fire pits or heaters, choose FR-rated materials and keep safe distances.

Accessories That Make a Difference

  • Roll Up Straps: Quick release adjustable cam buckle roll up straps allow you to easily secure the panel in the open position instantly transforming your structure into a bright open space.
  • Zipped Access Doors: Colour coordinated YKK Zips allow easy access
  • Rails for Neat Edges: Fit panels to Awning/Keder Rails (popular: Awning Rail Small).
  • High Quality Outdoor Hardware & Fasteners: Marine grade turn buttons, press studs, and eyelets for secure closures: Turn ButtonsIndustrial Brass Eyelets
  • Window Covers & Blinds: Internal or external covers can be added to windows for privacy.

Winter Weather and High Winds

In recent years the weather has become more unpredictable with strong wind and gales becoming more common, it is with this in mind and the safety of the public that particular attention should be given to the weather forecast.

  • Check weather forecast and gust wind speeds.
  • Inspect panels and fasteners. Replace worn fixings (see Hardware).
  • Roll up the walls panels in high winds (named storms) to allow the wind to pass through the structure and prevent damage.
  • Do not leave a combination of some side panels rolled up and some down.

Tip: Side panels and doors should not be rolled up and stored when wet for more than a few days. Dry panels before rolling up. For care tips, see Product After-Care.

FAQs

Q: Will clear PVC fog in cold weather?
A: Add vents to balance humidity; consider adding mesh vents (Mesh Fabric).  If the window does go misty you will need to unroll the panel and dry for a few days. It usually clears when dried. Side panels and doors should not be rolled up and stored when wet for more than a few days to prevent windows from misting up.

Q: How many sides should I add?
A: Start with the windward side and one adjacent wall. Add a third if temperatures drop further—use a Window Panel for visibility.

Q: Can I DIY fit panels?
A: Yes. Most customers fit with basic tools using Awning/Keder Rails and appropriate fixings. For bespoke sizing, start at the Gazebo Side Panels page.
