Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

What is heavy duty canvas?

Canvas fabric that is extremely strong and durable. Canvas fabric weighing 407g/m² (12oz) and above is generally called heavy duty. Heavy duty canvas has a high tensile and tear strength and is well suited for heavy purpose applications such as tarpaulins, truck covers and marquees.

Is cotton canvas waterproof?

Cotton canvas and polyester/cotton canvas are waterproof. The waterproof finish is normally built into the finishing chemical which is then impregnated into the fabric during manufacture. When joining canvas panels together, extra attention is required to select the correct type of seam construction and thread to avoid any unwanted seam leakage.

How wide is canvas fabric?

Canvas fabric is commonly available in 91cm (3ft) and 183cm (6ft) widths. We also offer 150cm and 200cm widths. Roll lengths vary due to the canvas manufacturing process. This is experienced throughout the industry.

What is canvas bag material?

We recommend 407g/m² (12oz) Rip-Stop canvas for heavy duty bags. Rip-Stop canvas is composed of a cross woven polyester and cotton blend. Rip-Stop canvas is immensely tough. Used for heavy purpose applications requiring strength such as industrial tarpaulins, vehicle covers, tool bags, kit bags, welding screens, and heavy marquees. This polyester and cotton blend canvas has a high strength/weight ratio which gives a longer life without heavy weight. The Rip-Stop weave gives a high tear strength resulting in good durability and resistance to damage.

What is tent canvas made of?

Traditional marquee canvas is made from cotton or a polyester and cotton blend. Cotton fibre is spun into yarns, then the yarns are woven together to make cotton canvas or woven with synthetic polyester yarns to make cotton/polyester canvas. Flame retardant, rot and waterproof finishes are built into the finishing chemical which is then impregnated into the fabric.

What fabric is used for tents?

Traditional marquees are made from polyester/cotton canvas. Polyester/cotton canvas fabric is naturally breathable - its ability to regulate temperature and moisture make it unique. Cotton canvas is often used to make canopies, marquees, and camping tents due to its breathable nature - a cotton canvas marquee or camping tent will keep cool on hot days and warm during cold nights. Cotton canvas fabric's ability to manage condensation is superior to most modern, manmade fabrics. Modern marquees and tents are made from PVC coated fabric. PVC coated fabric is easy to clean, weather-resistant, and has excellent strength and durability. PVC coated fabric is made up of a woven base fabric (normally polyester), a bonding or adhesive agent, and exterior PVC coatings to give it these qualities. Camping tents are made from PU coated fabric. PU coated fabric is made up of a synthetic woven base fabric (usually polyester or nylon) with a waterproofing polyurethane coating or laminate. The polyurethane coating is applied to a single side of the base fabric, this makes the fabric water resistant, light weight and flexible. Applications include: camping tents, light duty covers, clothing and bags.

Our flame retardant fabrics are generally tested to BS7837 for textiles used in the construction of tents, marquees and similar textile structures.

How can fabric be treated with a fire retardant?
